The "First 24 Hours": Handling and Inspecting Your New Components

Introduction: Precision Starts at the Loading Dock

When your TOCO shipment arrives, you aren't just receiving pieces of steel; you are receiving high-precision instruments machined to micron-level tolerances. The way these components are handled in the first 24 hours determines how they will perform for the next 10 years.

Improper unboxing or handling can introduce contaminants, nick the raceways, or—worst of all—cause a ball screw nut to lose its internal bearings. Follow this "Day One" guide to ensure your installation goes perfectly.

1. The Unboxing Protocol

Before you grab a box cutter, remember that the surface of a rail or screw is sensitive.

  • Avoid "Blind" Cutting: Never plunge a knife deep into the packaging. You risk scratching the surface of the rail or slicing the rubber seals on a carriage.

  • Keep it Level: Always keep ball screws and linear rails horizontal. Propping them against a wall at an angle can cause long rails to bow or lead to the carriage sliding off the end.

  • Wear Gloves: Human sweat is acidic. Touching a clean, unlubricated rail with bare hands can leave "fingerprint rust" within hours.

2. Anti-Rust Oil is NOT Lubricant

This is the most common mistake in the industry.

  • The Protective Layer: TOCO components are shipped with a thin coating of anti-rust oil. This is designed for storage and shipping only.

  • The Cleaning Step: Before installation, wipe the anti-rust oil off with a clean, lint-free cloth and a light solvent (like mineral spirits).

  • Immediate Re-Lubrication: Once the anti-rust oil is gone, the steel is vulnerable. Apply your specified machine grease or oil immediately to prevent oxidation.

3. The "Golden Rule": Never Remove the Carriage

Most TOCO linear guides are shipped with the carriage already on the rail or on a plastic "shipping mandrel."

  • The Danger: If you slide a carriage off the rail without a mandrel, the internal steel balls will fall out. Replacing them in the correct sequence is nearly impossible in the field.

  • If you must remove it: Use a plastic dummy rail (mandrel) of the exact same size to transfer the carriage.

4. Visual & Functional Inspection

Before mounting, perform a 3-point check:

  1. The Label Check: Verify that the model number (e.g., MGN12-H) and the accuracy grade (C5, C7, etc.) match your order and the laser etching on the part.

  2. The Surface Check: Look for any "dings" or nicks that might have occurred during transit.

  3. The "Feel" Test: Gently slide the carriage or nut by hand. It should feel consistent. Note: If the unit has a "Preload," it may feel slightly stiff—this is normal and necessary for precision.

5. Proper Temporary Storage

If you aren't installing the parts immediately:

  • Lay them Flat: Do not store rails vertically.

  • Original Packaging: Keep them in the VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) paper or plastic wrap they arrived in.

  • Climate Control: Avoid areas with high humidity or temperature swings, which cause condensation.
