Introduction: Small Scale, Big Performance
Miniature linear guides are not just "shrunken" versions of standard rails. At sizes as small as 7mm wide, the physics of friction, surface tension, and manufacturing tolerances become significantly more challenging.
TOCO’s miniature series (MGN and MGW) is engineered for applications where every millimeter of "machine real estate" counts.
1. MGN vs. MGW: Choosing Your Footprint
TOCO offers two primary types of miniature guides to suit different loading conditions:
MGN Series (Standard): A narrow, compact design ideal for applications with space constraints in width.
MGW Series (Wide): Features a wider rail and carriage. This design is specifically engineered to handle high moment loads (tilting forces), allowing for a single-rail setup where you might otherwise need two.

2. Material Science: SUS440C as the Standard
Unlike larger rails where stainless steel is an optional upgrade, most TOCO miniature guides are made of SUS440C stainless steel by default.
Reasoning: Small machines are often used in cleanrooms or medical labs.
Precision: Stainless steel provides excellent dimensional stability at a small scale, ensuring the carriage slides smoothly without "stick-slip" motion.
3. The Challenge of "Ball Loss"
In miniature carriages, the steel balls are tiny (often less than 1mm in diameter). In the past, removing a carriage from a rail meant the balls would fall out and be lost.
The TOCO Solution: As per our experence, our miniature series features ball-retaining wires. These tiny spring-steel wires keep the balls locked in the raceway even when the carriage is removed from the rail for maintenance.
4. Key Applications for Miniature Guides
Where do these tiny powerhouses live?
3D Printers & Desktop CNCs: High precision and low weight for the moving "gantry."
Semiconductor Pick-and-Place: Moving silicon wafers with micron-level accuracy.
Pipetting Robots: Used in diagnostic labs to move samples between test tubes.
Optical Equipment: Positioning lenses and sensors for laser alignment.
5. Installation Sensitivity
Because miniature guides are so small, they are highly sensitive to mounting surface errors.
Surface Flatness: A microscopic bump on your mounting plate that wouldn't affect a 25mm rail will cause a 7mm rail to bind.
Torque Control: You must use a calibrated torque wrench for the tiny M2 or M3 mounting bolts. Over-tightening can actually deform the rail itself.
